This is to thank you all for putting up with me until now what with the voices and poetry and secrecy of my real voice and all. And that certainly doesn’t exist anymore. One of my longest videos to date, but well worth it if you have half an hour to kill. They used a lot of kids and that’s what I was there for. Back then, everything on TV was kind of unique. There were no videotapes, so if you didn’t see Uncle Miltie on a particular night, you missed it. “You had a TV in a whole neighborhood of people, and everyone went to the guy’s house to watch his TV. “The interesting thing about my career is that I was part of something that no longer exists,” Walken replies, recalling his time as a child actor in variety shows - “the early days of television after World War II, when television was born, late ’40s and early ’50s.” Those were the days. I jot down the many iterations of Hollywood and entertainment he’s seen - the Studio 54 days, the coked ’80s, the big-budget ’90s - and ask what his favorite experience was. You’re out there and hectic.” He doesn’t regret missing out on a “normal childhood” because “I don’t know what it would have been like. If you’re a child performer, you’re competitive. It gave me experience of doing what I do as an adult. “It was an unusual education and I’m very glad I had it. “It was very different from most other childhoods,” says Walken. “Sometimes I feel like I’m a central casting agency,” Rosalie said, acknowledging that her sons would have to drop out of regular school to get more flexible training for work hours. In 1954, when Christopher was 11 and still called “Ronald,” his mother Rosalie wrote a national newspaper article describing how she brought her three sons into the business. Walken’s no-nonsense approach can be traced back to his childhood, when Walken and his two brothers trundled from Queens to Manhattan for auditions and rushed to book gigs on variety shows and soap operas.
